What Is a Facelift?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce visible signs of aging in the face and neck. As we age, our skin loses elasticity, facial fat diminishes, and gravity takes its toll, leading to sagging skin, deep creases, and loss of youthful contours. With facelift surgery, you can restore a younger, fresher, and more attractive look to your face, taking years off your appearance.

A modern facelift by a skilled board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Yash rejuvenates the lower face by lifting, tightening, and reattaching the underlying musculature and connective tissue (the superficial muscular aponeurotic system, or SMAS), repositioning facial fat, and removing excess skin that has stretched and sagged.

Dr. Yash’s Philosophy

Dr. Yash Avashia’s philosophy about facelifts is that it is not about changing how you look or creating an artificial appearance. It’s about restoring the natural contours and proportions of your younger face, helping you look like the best version of yourself. Dr. Yash employs the latest surgical techniques to produce natural-looking facelift results. People will notice that you look refreshed and attractive, but most will never guess that the change is a result of cosmetic surgery.

How Can a Facelift Improve My Appearance?

A facelift corrects the signs of aging in the lower portion of the face. By lifting and tightening the skin and underlying tissues, a facelift can:

Define the Jawline Eliminate jowls and restore a smooth, crisp jawline contour that has become obscured with age.

Contour the Neck Tighten loose neck skin and improve the neck-to-jaw angle for a more elegant profile.

Soften Deep Creases Reduce deep folds around the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds and marionette lines).

Restore Cheek Volume Lift sagging cheeks back to their youthful position, recreating fuller, more defined cheekbones.

The ultimate goal is achieving results that appear natural, refreshed, and harmonious with your facial features—not overdone or artificial.

For a simple test of how a facelift might improve your appearance, place your fingers on the skin at the top of your cheekbones and jaw and gently push upward. If the change makes the lower portion of your face look younger and your jawline more defined, you may benefit from a facelift.

A facelift addresses these concerns by lifting and tightening the underlying facial tissues, repositioning and removing facial fat, and removing excess skin. The result is a refreshed, more youthful appearance that looks natural and can take years off your appearance.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

If you’re bothered by the signs of aging on your face and find that non-invasive facial treatments like Botox® and dermal fillers aren’t enough to correct the problem, a facelift may be the solution you’re looking for. The best candidates are in good health, don’t smoke, and have realistic expectations for the improvements the procedures can make.

The best way to determine if you are a suitable candidate for a facelift is to meet personally with Dr. Yash for a confidential consultation at our office. During this one-on-one meeting, Dr. Yash will evaluate your facial features and ask questions to understand your goals for improving your appearance. He will also review your medical history. Based on his observations and the information you share, Dr. Yash will advise you on the best approach to getting the look you desire.

Preferred Surgical Technique

Dr. Yash specializes in the deep plane facelift technique, which he believes provides the most natural and longest-lasting results available today. This advanced approach differs fundamentally from other facelift methods.

Understanding the Deep Plane Technique

To understand what makes the deep plane facelift special, it helps to know a bit about facial anatomy. Your face has several layers, like a layered cake. From outside to inside, you have:

  • Skin – the outermost layer
  • Fat compartments – pockets of fat that give your face volume and shape
  • SMAS layer – a supportive sheet of tissue that connects to your facial muscles
  • Facial ligaments – strong bands that attach deeper tissues to bone
  • Muscles and bone – the deepest structures

As we age, these facial ligaments act like anchor points, but they also hold sagging tissues down. Traditional facelifts work above these ligaments, which limits how much lifting can be achieved. The deep plane technique works beneath these structures.

How Dr. Yash’s Performs the Deep Plane Facelift

Strategic Ligament Release: I carefully release the key facial ligaments that are holding the sagging tissues downward. These include the zygomatic ligaments (cheek area) and mandibular ligaments (jawline). Releasing these allows for much greater mobility and lifting potential.

Deep Layer Lifting: Rather than just tightening the surface, I work at the SMAS level—the deeper supportive layer of your face. I lift this entire layer as a unified unit, along with the overlying fat and skin, preserving the natural relationships between structures.

Customized Vector Lifting: The deep plane approach allows me to lift tissues in a more vertical, posterior direction, which is how your face aged (downward). This creates more natural results than horizontal pulling, which can look stretched or artificial.

Secure Suspension: I suspend the lifted SMAS layer to stable, deeper structures, ensuring your results will last for many years. The skin is then re-draped naturally without tension, which promotes better healing and avoids the “windblown” look.

Benefits of the Deep Plane Approach

Natural Results Lifting all layers together maintains natural facial contours and avoids the “operated” appearance.

Longer-Lasting Outcomes By addressing the deeper support structures, results typically last 10-15 years or more.

Better Mid-Face Rejuvenation Superior improvement of the cheeks and nasolabial folds compared to other techniques.

Preserved Facial Expression Working below the muscle layer preserves facial nerve function and natural expressions.

What Is the Process for a Facelift Surgery?

Before a Facelift

Dr. Yash is a partner at the Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute and will perform your procedure in the Institute’s state-of-the-art surgery center. The Institute is the top facility for aesthetic surgery in Dallas and among the best in the country. On surgery day, you will check in and meet with Dr. Yash and your anesthesia provider.

You will be escorted to the operating room by a nurse and positioned comfortably on the operating table before you slowly fall asleep with general anesthesia. Dr. Yash works with some of the best anesthesia providers in Dallas, who are highly skilled in administering anesthesia and ensuring your experience is as smooth as possible.

During a Facelift

Facelifts are highly customized procedures. The specific approach for your surgery will be determined by the signs of aging to be corrected and your goals for the procedure, as determined during your consultation. In a facelift procedure, fat grafting to the deep compartments is performed first to restore volume in the areas of volume loss (forehead, above and below eyes, cheeks, jawline, nasolabial folds). An incision is made, hugging the sideburn at the hairline, carefully following the delicate anatomy in front of the ear and extending behind the ear to the lower scalp. Deep tissue layers are entered, all areas of tension are released, and the deep layer is repositioned and lifted to correct the gravitational changes of aging.  Facial fat may be repositioned to fill hollowed areas. The remaining skin is excised and tightened and gently laid back over the repositioned tissues for a naturally smooth appearance. Sutures are used to close the incision.

After a Facelift

A facelift is performed as an inpatient procedure. Once alert after your anesthesia, you will be taken to the Cloister, the overnight facility adjacent to our surgery center. Dr. Yash will see you here once in the evening and again the following morning. The Cloister has a 24-hour nurse to provide care and ensure you are recovering well. Before returning home the next day, your face and hair will be washed in the Cloister’s salon. Dr. Yash will provide you with a full list of post-operative instructions and will be available if you have any immediate questions or issues.

What Can I Expect in Facelift Recovery?

Recovery will vary depending on the specifics of your procedure. Most patients require a week of rest and light activity at home after facelift surgery. In the first week, you may experience some bruising and swelling in the surgical area.

You can reduce these side effects by elevating your head and applying ice along with following Dr. Yash’s post-surgical recovery protocol below. You may also experience numbness and gentle tenderness in the area, and it’s common to feel some tightness as the skin adjusts to its new position. Dr. Yash will prescribe pain medication, as needed, to ease any discomfort in the days just after surgery.

Enhanced Facelift Recovery Protocol

Dr. Yash uses an enhanced recovery protocol for his facelift patients, which includes post-surgical lymphatic facial massages, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, along with select office-based scar enhancement treatments like specialized skin care and laser treatments.

Dr. Yash will schedule a follow-up visit in a week to 10 days after your surgery to remove sutures and assess your progress. He and his staff will be available at any time to answer your questions during recovery.

Dr. Yash will recommend gradually resuming activity and exercise about 2-4 weeks after surgery. Your face will be fully healed in about a month. The results will continue to improve over the following months, effectively delivering a more youthful, attractive, and energetic appearance. That change can work wonders to strengthen your self-esteem and confidence—some of the most significant benefits of any cosmetic procedure.

Facelift FAQs Dallas, TX

The duration of a facelift procedure varies based on the extent of the procedure and the individual case, but it typically takes between 3 to 5 hours.

Most patients can return to their normal activities within 2 weeks. However, complete recovery and final results can take a few months.

While a facelift can take years off your appearance, it doesn’t stop the aging process. However, the results can last for many years. Dr. Yash may also recommend procedures or treatments to extend the longevity of your results.

The ideal age for a facelift is usually between 40 and 65, when signs of facial aging like sagging skin and jowls become more noticeable. However, candidacy is more about visible aging than a specific number – some patients benefit from a facelift in their late 30s, while others wait until their 60s and beyond.

Dr. Yash’s non-surgical facelift uses a combination of solutions like radiofrequency microneedling, liposuction, and injectable products to create temporary lifting and contouring effects. While this treatment cannot produce the same dramatic results as surgery, it can do wonders to reverse the earliest stages of facial aging with less discomfort.

Dr. Yash uses general anesthesia to ensure you are fully asleep throughout this surgery. As a result, most patients do not recall any aspect of their procedures. Afterward, you will likely experience mild soreness and tightness, which you can manage with prescription medication until it subsides.

Dr. Yash’s patients do not regret having a facelift.  He takes time to screen all his patients to confirm they are optimal candidates for the surgery. After surgery, they often report increased confidence, improved self-image, and a refreshed, more youthful appearance that feels worth the downtime.

A Japanese facelift commonly refers to a non-surgical facial technique using manual massage, facial yoga, or thread lifting. These methods promote circulation and skin tone but don’t offer the long-lasting or structural results of surgery.

A decade after a facelift, you’ll still look younger than your natural aging trajectory. While some laxity returns with time, your face will retain improved contour, fewer wrinkles, and a more refreshed appearance compared to your peers who did not have surgery. Your face will not age the same as it would if you did not have a facelift.  The deep anatomic work done to restore shape and support to your face normally remains over time. What changes after a facelift are the skin quality, and most patients experience normal skin aging and volume deflation.

The answer to this question depends on the details of your specific surgical plan, which will determine its complexity. Dr. Yash and his team will give you a breakdown of the costs associated with this surgery at your consultation.
