Fat Grafting

Fat Grafting in Dallas, TX with Dr. Yash

Facial Fat grafting, also called fat transfer, combines two procedures to make improvements to more than one part of your body. The process begins by using liposuction, to remove fat from a spot on your body where you would like a slimming effect. That fat then gets purified and injected into a place on your body where you would like to add volume. The beauty of fat grafting is that it uses tissue from your body to make long-lasting enhancements to your appearance — trimming an area where excess fat is a problem and filling, plumping, or rounding an area where volume is lacking.

Fat grafting can make your face look younger and fresher — for example, by filling in hollowed areas under your eyes, rounding your cheeks, or plumping your lips. It can also add fullness to your breasts or buttocks or smooth the backs of your hands.

Dr. Yash Avashia has specialized training and extensive experience in performing cosmetic and reconstructive surgery procedures. He applies his surgical skill, aesthetic sensibility, and extensive medical knowledge to produce beautiful and natural-looking results. Why Might I Consider Fat Grafting?

The great appeal of fat grafting is that it makes two changes in a single treatment session, removing excess fat from one part of your body and adding it to another area that needs more volume. Many people also appreciate that fat grafting uses no manufactured fillers, only tissue from your body. In the hands of a skilled plastic surgeon, the results are natural-looking and last longer than enhancement with fillers.

You might consider fat grafting if you can benefit from liposuction to slim a part of your body that has stubborn pockets of excess fat — bulges that are resistant to diet and exercise — and you would like to add volume to your face or another part of your body.

    • On your face, fat grafting can:
    • Round out flat or sunken cheeks
    • Fill in hollows under the eyes to correct a sunken look
    • Smooth and soften facial wrinkles, lines, and creases
    • Enhance your jawline
    • Improve the shape of your nose
    • Plump your lips
    • Fill indented scars, such as those from acne, to make them less visible
    • Improve the tone of your facial skin, making it smoother and healthier-looking
  • Elsewhere on your body, fat grafting can:
  • Remove accumulations of excess fat where you’d like to be slimmer, such as your thighs, hips, abdomen, or buttocks
  • Add a moderate amount of volume where you’d like more roundness and curves, such as your breasts, buttocks, or hips
  • Correct breast asymmetry
  • Restore a natural shape to your breasts after a lumpectomy
  • Improve the health of breast tissue after radiation treatment or implant removal for capsular contracture
  • Smooth the backs of your hands to make them look younger
  • Add padding to bony feet

It’s also possible to combine fat grafting with other procedures. For example, if you are considering breast augmentation with implants, fat grafting can add volume and help make the results look more natural.

Fat grafting is only an option if you have areas of excess fat that are suitable for reducing with liposuction.

Your Fat Grafting Consultation

In your consultation with Dr. Yash, he will ask questions to understand the improvements you would like to make to your face or body with fat grafting. He will examine the parts of your body where you would like to remove fat with liposuction and the parts of your face and body where you wish to have more volume. Dr. Yash will then explain to you whether he recommends fat grafting or a different approach, and how the procedure he proposes can improve your appearance. He will tell you what to expect before and after the procedure. He will also review the cost of the fat grafting procedure with you and discuss payment options. His goal is to be fully transparent so that you can make a confident and educated decision.

What Can I Expect Before, During, and After My Fat Grafting Procedure?

Before

Dr. Yash is a partner in the Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute and will perform your fat grafting procedure in the Institute’s state-of-the-art surgery center. The Institute is the top facility for aesthetic surgery in Dallas and among the best in the country. You will arrive on surgery day, check in, and meet with Dr. Yash. Depending on the extent of your liposuction, you may require local or general anesthesia. If Dr. Yash opts to use local anesthesia, he may give you a sedative to help you stay calm and relaxed during the procedure.

During

Fat grafting begins with liposuction. Dr. Yash makes small incisions for insertion of the liposuction cannula. He uses various methods, often in combination, to break up the fat for removal. Breaking up or liquefying the fat allows Dr. Yash to remove it without disturbing blood vessels, nerves, or connective tissue. This technique produces less trauma in the treated area and results in less swelling and bruising in recovery. When Dr. Yash has removed sufficient fat to create the desired results, he closes the incisions.

The next step in fat grafting is to process and purify a portion of the extracted fat for injection where you want to add volume. When the fat is ready for injection, your surgical team will clean the treatment area and use a topical anesthetic to minimize any discomfort from the injections. You may receive multiple injections, depending on the extent of your treatment.

After

Fat grafting is an outpatient procedure. Once you are alert again after your anesthesia or sedative, a friend or family member can drive you home to begin your recovery. Dr. Yash will provide you with a full list of post-treatment instructions and will be available if you have any immediate questions or issues.

What Can I Expect in Recovery?

At first, you can expect some mild swelling and bruising in the areas treated with liposuction. We’ll provide you with a compression garment or elastic bandages to minimize these effects and promote healing. You may experience some short-term discomfort in the areas treated with fat injections. You can treat any early discomfort with pain medication, following Dr. Yash’s guidance.

You will need some downtime for recovery from the liposuction portion of your procedure. Patients can return to work as soon as they feel comfortable, which is typically within a few days. Dr. Yash will advise you to avoid all but light activities for the first two weeks, after which you can gradually build up to more strenuous activity over the following month.

You’ll see initial results from the fat injections immediately, and from the liposuction after about a week, when the swelling and bruising subside. You’ll continue to look better over the next few weeks in the fat-enhanced areas and over the next few months in the areas reduced with liposuction, as all residual swelling disappears.
