What to Expect When Recovering From a Facelift

With over 230,000 facelifts performed in 2020, the facelift remains among the top five most popular cosmetic procedures in the U.S.

However, recovery from a facelift is an often-misunderstood process. Expert plastic surgeon Dr. Yash Avashia aims to give his patients realistic results about all facets of their surgery, including what to expect during your healing process for the best possible results.

What Happens During a Facelift?

To fully appreciate the healing process, you first need to understand what Dr. Yash will do to refresh your appearance. The goal of this surgery is to tighten lax skin in the mid- and lower face and smooth wrinkles around the mouth, chin, and neck.

While you are under anesthesia, Dr. Yash will make tiny incisions that will allow him to access and reposition the deep tissue layers of your face. Through these, he will tighten your facial anatomy to reverse drooping and sagging, remove excess skin, and carefully reposition what remains for a naturally smooth, rejuvenated appearance. During your customized Dallas facelift, Dr. Yash may also use his knowledge of facial anatomy to reposition facial fat to fill hollowed areas.

What to Expect During Recovery

It’s vital to understand that a facelift is major surgery, and the resulting stress requires several weeks and months to fully recover from.

Immediately after your facelift, you can expect bruising and swelling that may initially obscure your results. We’ll send you home with bandages protecting your incisions, which Dr. Yash will remove in a follow-up consultation approximately 72 hours after your operation.

While you heal, you must keep your heart rate as steady as possible, remain out of the sun, and keep your stitches dry until Dr. Yash removes them. Dr. Yash will recommend a gradual resumption of activity and exercise, starting about a week after surgery.

Potential Complications

As with any surgery, recovering from a facelift can involve some risks. However, you can do your part to minimize these complications by choosing to work with an experienced, board-certified, and highly qualified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Yash.

The most significant risks are an infection or the stitches coming undone, allowing the skin to return to its original position before it has had the chance to adjust properly. Sticking to the post-surgical directives Dr. Yash provides should minimize these possible consequences.
