What Is a Facelift?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure to raise drooping skin and underlying tissue on the lower part of the face, from below your eyes to your chin and jawline. The facelift procedure eliminates jowls and smooths wrinkles and creases that are among the most visible signs of aging. Facelift surgery restores a younger, fresher, and more attractive look to your face, taking years off your appearance.

A modern facelift by a skilled board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Yash rejuvenates the lower face by lifting, tightening, and reattaching the underlying musculature and connective tissue (the superficial muscular aponeurotic system, or SMAS), repositioning facial fat, and removing excess skin that has stretched and sagged.

What Is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift is a set of surgical procedures to give a younger and more attractive look to your neck. Sagging, excess neck skin is removed in a procedure known as cervicoplasty. When needed, loose or banded neck muscles are tightened and smoothed in a procedure known as platysmaplasty. A neck lift procedure can also include the removal of excess fat from the neck. A neck lift can eliminate the sagging skin under the chin, known as a “turkey neck” or “turkey wattle.”

The changes made in a neck lift make you look both younger and thinner. A neck lift and facelift are often performed together. Either or both can be combined with a brow lift or eyelid surgery for more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

How Can a Facelift or Neck Lift Improve My Appearance?

Facelift

A facelift corrects the signs of aging in the lower part of the face. By lifting and tightening the skin and underlying tissue, a facelift can:

  • erase wrinkles and lines to leave your face radiant, smooth, and firm
  • smooth deeper creases and folds, including marionette lines and nasolabial folds
  • eliminate jowls
  • enhance the definition of the jawline
  • correct loss of facial volume in the cheeks and under the eyes

For a simple test of how a facelift can improve your appearance, place your fingers on the skin at the top of your cheekbones and gently push upward. If the change makes the lower part of your face look younger and your jawline more defined, you may benefit from a facelift.

Neck Lift

A neck lift procedure addresses loose or sagging skin, weakened muscles, and fat buildup on the neck and under the chin. The result is a smoother, more slender, and younger-looking neck. A neck lift can:

  • get rid of hanging, loose neck skin on the neck and under the chin, such as a turkey neck
  • remove and flatten a double chin
  • slim and tighten a flabby-looking neck
  • eliminate horizontal neck bands

To get an idea of the changes a neck lift can make, put your fingers just below your jawline and push the skin up toward your cheeks. If the shift makes your chin and neck look younger and less flabby, you may benefit from a neck lift.

The effect of the improvements from a facelift or neck lift is to give you a more youthful, attractive, and energetic appearance. That change can work wonders to strengthen your self-esteem and confidence—some of the more significant benefits of any cosmetic procedure.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift or Neck Lift?

If you’re bothered by the signs of aging on your face and neck and find that non-invasive facial treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers aren’t enough to correct the problem, a facelift or neck lift may be the solution you’re looking for. The best candidates are in good health, don’t smoke, and have realistic expectations for the improvements the procedures can make.

The best way to determine if you are a suitable candidate for a facelift or neck lift is to meet personally with Dr. Yash in a confidential consultation at our office. During this one-on-one meeting, Dr. Yash will evaluate your facial features and ask questions to understand your goals for improving your appearance. He will also review your medical history. Based on his observations and the information you share in the consultation, he will advise you on the best approach to getting the look you want.

What Can I Expect Before, During, and After My Facelift?

Before

Dr. Yash is a partner in the Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute and will perform your procedure in the Institute’s state-of-the-art surgery center. The Institute is the top facility for aesthetic surgery in Dallas and among the best in the country. You will arrive on surgery day, check-in, and meet with Dr. Yash and your anesthesia provider.

You will be escorted to the operating room by a nurse and positioned comfortably on the operating room table before you slowly fall asleep with general anesthesia. Dr. Yash works with some of the best anesthesia providers in Dallas, who are highly skilled in administering anesthesia and making sure your experience is as smooth as possible.

During

Facelifts and neck lifts are both highly customized procedures. The specific approach for your surgery will be determined by the signs of aging to be corrected and your goals for the procedure, as discussed in your consultation.

  • Fat grafting to the deep compartments are performed first to restore volume in the areas of volume loss (forehead, above and below eyes, cheeks, jawline, nasolabial folds)
  • An incision is made hugging the side burn at the hairline, carefully following the front of the ear’s delicate anatomy, extending behind the ear to the lower scalp
  • Excess skin is removed
  • Deep tissue layers repositioned and tightened to correct the gravitational changes of aging
  • Facial fat may be repositioned to fill hollowed areas
  • The remaining skin is tightened and gently laid back over the repositioned underlying tissue for a naturally smooth appearance
  • Sutures are used to close the incision
  • An incision is made at the edge of the hairline and extending behind the ear, as in a facelift, and/or in the natural skin crease under the chin and jawline
  • Excess skin is removed
  • The underlying tissue is raised and neck muscles (platysma) are tightened, as needed
  • Excess fat in the neck and under the chin is removed or repositioned, as needed
  • The remaining skin is tightened
  • Sutures are used to close the incision

After

A facelift or neck lift is performed as an inpatient procedure. Once you are alert again after your anesthesia, you will be taken to the Cloister, the overnight facility adjacent to the surgery center. Dr. Yash will see you here once in the evening and again the following morning. The Cloister has a 24-hour nurse to provide you care making sure you are recovering well.  Prior to returning home the next day, you will have your face and hair washed in the Cloister’s salon.  Dr. Yash will provide you with a full list of post-operative instructions for you to follow and will be available if you have any immediate questions or issues.

What Can I Expect in Facelift or Neck Lift Recovery?

Recovery will vary depending on the specifics of your procedure. Still, most patients will need about a week of rest and light activity at home after facelift or neck lift surgery. In the first two weeks, you may experience some redness, bruising, and swelling in the area of the surgery. Keeping your head elevated and applying ice can help to reduce these after-effects. You may also have some numbness and tenderness in the area, and it’s common to feel some tightness as the skin adjusts to its new position. Dr. Yash will prescribe pain medication, as needed, to ease any discomfort in the days just after surgery.

Dr. Yash will schedule a follow-up visit a week after your surgery to remove sutures and assess your progress. He and his staff will be available at any time to answer your questions during recovery.

Dr. Yash will recommend a gradual resumption of activity and exercise, starting about a week after surgery. Your face and neck will be fully healed in about a month. At that point, you’ll see the full results of the surgery and be able to engage in more strenuous exercise. The results will continue to improve over the following months.

FAQs About Dallas Facelifts and Neck Lifts

The results of a facelift or neck lift last for many years. Your face will continue to age, of course, with some additional loosening and drooping of facial skin. You may choose to have a second procedure after ten or fifteen years to refresh your appearance. Proper skin care, including careful sun protection, good nutrition, and regular exercise, can help extend your results.

Dr. Yash provides facelift maintenance program for all his patients through the EpiCenter Skin and Laser Center.

All plastic surgery leaves scars, but the incisions for a facelift or neck lift are carefully placed to make the scars nearly invisible—at the edge of the hairline, behind the ears, our in the natural contours below the chin. Scars will appear darker or redder at first and can be concealed with makeup. After about a year, they fade to match the color of your skin closely.

Dr. Yash provides a scar program for all his patients through the EpiCenter Skin and Laser Center to assure that your scars heal in the best possible way.

Non-surgical treatments, such as laser skin resurfacing or radiofrequency skin tightening, can enhance the improvements made with a facelift or neck lift by brightening and smoothing your complexion. Lip augmentation with dermal fillers can make your lips fuller and younger-looking. Surgery on the upper part of the face, such as with an eyelid lift or brow lift, can eliminate frown lines in your forehead and make your eyes look younger and more alert.

You will be required to wear a face and head wrap for the first 2 weeks after surgery.  Afterwards, you will be required to wear it for an additional 2 weeks, only at night.  Most patients are comfortable with going out in public after 2 weeks once they don’t have to wear the face wrap. At this point, the sutures have been removed and women can wear make-up.

The best approach to maximizing results is to follow Dr. Yash’s facelift maintenance program.  This includes a special combination of superficial lasers, chemical peels, skin care, and radiofrequency energy devices to keep the skin looking refreshed and healthy.  Following a balanced diet and exercise program will also help maintain good results after surgery.  A universal rule is never to smoke as smoking will speed up your aging process and affect the longevity of your results.

A facelift consultation is a facial rejuvenation consultation.  You should take some time to look at yourself in the mirror and carefully identify areas of your face that you would like to discuss with Dr. Yash. Start from your upper face (forehead), upper eyelids, lower eyelids, and then look at your midface (cheeks), finishing up with your lower face (jawline and neck).  Having a clear understanding of goals will help Dr. Yash to create a customized plan for you.

Dr. Yash requires you to stop smoking for 4 weeks before and after surgery.

Patients may be facelift candidates as early as mid-40s going well into their 60’s and 70’s. Everyone ages at a different rate. This is influenced by both genetics and the environment (sun exposure, daily stress, etc.).

Non-surgical or minimally invasive options for the facelift include options that don’t involve incisions or scars but help address one or more component of your facial aging.  These options include facial fat grafting, skin resurfacing with lasers or chemical peels, radiofrequency skin tightening, submental or neck liposuction.
